Sergeant Dod Given Citation, Medals For Meritorious Action In CombatSergeant Halsey H. Dod. Jr., son of H. H. Dod, Sr., of 925 Chenibusco street, Pascagoula, has been awarded the Presidential citation for bravery and quick thinking under fire, the Silver Star, the Combat expert medal and the Purple Heart.A former student and football player at the University of Alabama, Sgt. Dod was one of the first paratroopers to land behind the German lines in the Normandy invasion on June 6 He was reported seriously wounded June 14 but he has recovered from his injuries and although he has not been sent back on active duty he has been discharged from the English hospital where he was under treatment for several weeks, according to word received by his father.He is a member of the famous 507th Parachute Regiment of the 82nd Airborne division, named by General Eisenhower The Fighting 507th.” His outfit was the first to lead an attack on a German held town in France.Recommended For CommissionHe volunteered for service in May, 1942. only a few weeks before he was to have graduated from the University of Alabama. He had been notified to report for Officer’s Candidate school just before his regiment was alerted to go overseas and the orders were cancelled so that he might go with his outfit. He has now been recommended for his commission *in combat.Born in New Jersey, Sgt. Dod attended high school in the East. His father came here about eight years ago and is a department head at the Southern Kraft Division, International Paper Company. He has been with the paper company for the part 25 years.Sgt. Dod married Miss Jesslyn Poe of Birmingham, whom he knew at the university, a year and a half ago. Mrs. Dod has made her home with her mother in Tuscaloosa since her husbandwent overseas a year ago.Letters from his son arrive about once a week.
