Mexican War Veteran DiesRECEIVED SANTA ANNA’S SWORD WHEN HE SURRENDERED.The funeral of Peter S. Daly, who was one of the few surviving veterans of the Mexican War, took place August 18 from the Church of SS. Peter and Paul, New York. Mr. Daly died at his home, at the age of 95 years.Mr. Daly was a sergeant in the Seventh New York Cavalry, which was Federalized and sent to the first border war. In the last campaign of the war all its commissioned officers werd killed in action, and it fell to the lot of Sergeant Daly, the ranking officer, to receive the sword of General Santa Anna when he surrendered. He saw service under General Winfield Scott at Buena Vista and Palo Alto. Mr. Daly was born in Tullamore, Kings County, Ireland, in 1822. He came to this country with his parents when a hoy and settled in the lower end of Manhattan.
