K KailHUA I) riofinoil NEAR WKST- port—Arrival of tiik Remains oi , Conductor Ward—Tho remains o 1 James Moore Ward, of this placo, win- was killed on Saturday morning last, by : tho terrible collision that occurred or ’ tho Philadelphia and Krio Kail roadabove Westport, arrived hero on Sunday » morning last, in a special car sent by thocompany to convoy him home. Mr, Ward was tho conductor of IhcTfrcight train which was run into by tho Erie Mail train, and was instantly killed. Mr Ki(linger, of Altoona, engineer on the came train, was also killed, and his body was on tho samo special that bnyght Mr Ward to this place.The particulars of this foarful accident, so tar as we havo been abloto learn them, nio as follows Conductor Ward's train, which was tho first section of the E injure freight, left Kano at tho usual time on Friday evening for Konnvo, with orders to take tho siding at West jK)rt to await tho mail train. Conductor E W Hymen, of the mail train, nUo received orders at Kenovo to wait at Westport until the first section of the Empire freight, (Conductor WarJ,) nr-lived, in case it was not there when ho got there The mail train under Hymen, arrived at Westport first, but instead of waiting for the freight, as it iliad been ordered to do, after a short stop went on About two miles beyond Westport, while going round a curve at full speed, U came upon tho freight, under Conductor Ward, which was running on time, at about twenty miles an hour. There was 110 time to reverse, and the collison was frightful Both engines wore overset agnvn«t the mountain side, and a number of cars completely wrecked The baggage car of the mail train wu» telescoped half wav hack into the smoking car, and tho screams of tho wounded passengers weru awful Conductor Ward, of tho freight, and his onginoer, Mr. Kilhngor, were instantly killed, being cut and mangled fearfully. The fireman escaped, almost miraculously, by jumping off as soon as bo raw the mail approaching, and falling into a ditch He was not hurt, although covered with lumber and shelled corn, thrown from tho cars, which fell upon him, tho lumber falling across the ditch instead of into it. This is what savod him Had tho lumber fallen lengthways into the ditch ho would have boon crushed to death On tho mail train, Conductor Hymen was 10 crushed and raangl**! as to bo hardly recognisable. His death was instantaneous Tho engineer McCormick was supposed to be latally hurl, but is not dead at this writing (Monday ) Tho fireman, Thomas Hannan, was killed, together with Mr B. C Brown and Mr. Winslow, of Lock Haven, and Mr. Kubright, of St Mary’s, Klk county About sixteen other persons woro wounded, moro or leas seriously, among which, strange to say, were no women or children Every attention was paid to tho sufferers, who wore conveyed to Konovo, where they bad medical attendance. Tho dead woro boxed up and sont to their different homes, and handsome coffins procured for them at tho company's expense
