Of the Meeting of the Sixty-eighth Annual Conference of the Preachers, late in Connexion with the Rev. John Wesley. IN laying before our readers an abstrac of the transactions of this Conference, we feel a gratification equal, if not superior, to that which we have felt on any for mer occasion, on account of the great and increasing prosperity of most of the Societies in particular, and the whole Connexion in general. On Monday, July 22, the Committee, chosen by the preceding Distric Meetings, consisting of 26 Mem bers, in addition to Mr. Benson, late President, and Dr. Coke, Secretary, assembled in Sheffield, for the purpose of drawing up a plan of the Stations of the Preachers for the ensuing year. ‘The interest which the Preachers take in the important cause in which they are engaged, brought together a large number of them from the dif ferent parts of the kingdom, so that before the conclusion of the week, about 940 arrived; and upwards of 290 were present during a great part of the two following weeks. On Monday, 29th, at six in the morning, the Preachers met in full Con ference, in the Chapel in Carver Street, of that town, and Mr. Benson, of course, going out of office, Mr. Charles Atmore, was chosen President, and Dr. Coke, Se cretary. The Sundry Committees, for the different departments of the business to be transacted were chosen, and the necessary Clerks appointed to take an exact ac count of the various branches of income and expenditure, and to report the same at a convenient time to the Conference. The Minutes of the different Distrits propo sing any new regulations, were afterwards read, and proper persons were named to prepare an abstract of them. The Conference then proceeded to enquire, as usual. What Preachers were to be admitted into ruLtL connexion this year? Who were to remain on trial? Who were proper to be admitted on trial? What Preachers had died during the last year? and who had defisted, or purposed to desist, from travel ling. To answer these enquiries took up a very considerable portion of time, and it was found, upon examination, that forty-four were proper to be incorporated with us, and forty to become probationers, the names of whom will be found in our Annual Minutes. No more than eight of the Preachers died the last year. ‘The increase of our Societies and Circuits called for an additional number of Preachers, and the Conference, desirous to receive none who cannot be recommended in the manner that their economy requires, met with considerable difficulty in pro curing them. Indeed, the number of Preachers recommended to be taken upon trial, who had been proposed to, and approved by, their respective Quarterly and Distric Meetings, was found considerably unequal to the demand. The Conference therefore proceeded to call over all the Circuits, and appointed to the Ministry a num ber of men, well recommended for piety and promising abilities, on condition of their being approved by their respective Quarterly Meetings, and by the Preachers appointed to examine them. As usual, the characters of the Preachers were carefully and faithfully examined, the result of which was very satisfatory. Our friends in Sheffield, several of whom are not in our Society, entertained the Preachers at their houses with a kindness and Christian hospitality highly to their credit. A course of Sermons, chiefly on the leading Docrines of Christianity, was preached in the principal chapel, and heard with pleasure and profit by very crowded congre gations. Some of those Discourses we hope to have the pleasure of inserting in.ous Monthly Miscellany, . The Stations of the Preachers, after mature consideration of that complicated subject, and attention to the wishes of our people in their various Circuits, were appointed as follows: The Rev. Dr. Coxe is General Superintendant of the Irish, Welsh, West- India, Nova-Scotia, and Newfoundland Missions. ” 1.
