The lighting if Sherman Way, the famous $500,000 joulevard through the Van Nuys-^ankershim tract of 47,000 acres, was lie idea of H. J. Whitley, who designed and built this greatest of \innrioan roadways. On August 10th, [012, the creation of the Van Nuy? ightlng district was submitted to the people of the district for a vote and; ;vas carried by a vote of nearly four' o one. A committee was appointed o take charge of the district's inter-•sts by the Board of County Supervis-jrs and this committee recommended he Installation of lights along Sher-nau Way from Encino avenue, the jastern boundary of the tract, to the (unction of the boulevard west of Dwensmoutli with the State highway, md along South Sherman Way. The system of lighting proposed passed hrotigh the townsites of Van Nuys ind Owensmoutli and owing to un-lvoidable delay the Suburbai Homes Company went ahead on its own in-tiative and installed ornamental elec-.roliers in hath these townsites, including uot only the boulevard, but ilso the side streets In the business actions of both town3. These lights aave been in operation in Van Nuys for at least • six months. The contract for the electroliers was awarded to the Llewellyn Tion Works of Los Angeles; for the Instllatioi of wiring, conduits, etc., tn the New-bcrry-Bendheim’Compuny of Los Alludes and lor the maintenance, to the Somneru L.unoruia uoinpiHiyof Los Angeles.month which were installed previously by the Suburban Homes Company. The other lights on the aide streets in the two towns are to be inniniaiiied by the Suburban Homes Company.troliers \vere provided In the central parls and along the boulevard outside oi the townsites and in the more remote sections the electroliers are of three-light design.The electroliers are all cast iron. The base is modeled after the Hill street posts in Los Angeles and the toj3 like those on East Fifth street.On September 29th a contract was awarded by the supervisors for six additions.! o!oc,rn1?prp, twr at Van Nuys, two at Marian and two at Owensmouth. This increased the total to 42b posts. In addition to the lights installed by the district, two private electroliers were installed in front of the residence of H. J. Whitley and one in front of the OLis residence, south of Van Nuys. These electroliers will be maintained by thenamed gentlemen.A further contract for 1SS lights along South Sherman Way and along the Ventura road (State highway) in the southern portion of the district was awarded by the supervisors October 20th. The awards for the electroliers and maintenance were to the same [irms as on the first contract, hut the installation for this work was awarded to the B. F. Kierullf Company of Los Angeles. The design of electroliers on thi3 section was all throe way and similar to those on Sherman Way. This conlract will increase the total number of electroliers in the district to 613. The posts along the hmilevard are staggered 33U feet apart and run about IS to a mile.
