Whitley —Will Attract Attention of Entire Electrical WorldA general celebration in honor ot turning on the lights along the boulevard from Enclno avenue to the State highway west of Owensmoutli will be held tomorrow evening. The lighting of Sherman Way, the famous $500,000 boulevard through the Van Nuys-hankers him tract of -17,000 acres, was the idea of H. J. Whitley, who designed and built tills greatest of American roadways. On August 10th, 1012, the creation of the Van Nny?| lighting district was submitted to the people of the district for a vote and, was carried by a vote of nearly four' to one. A committee was appointed to take charge of the district’s interests'by the Board of County Supervisors and this committee recommended the Installation of lights along Sher-mau Way from Eneino avenue, the eastern boundary of the tract, to the junction of the boulevard west of Owensmoutli with the State highway, and along South Sherman Way. The system of lighting proposed passed through Uie townsites of Van Nuya and Owensmoutli and owing to un: avoidable delay the Suburbar Homes Company went ahead on Us own initiative and installed ornamental electroliers in both tlmne townsites, including not only the boulevard, but also the side streets !n the business sections of both town3. These lights have been in operation in Van Nuys for at least • six months. The contracts for the installation .of the district lighting as originally proposed were finally awarded by the supervisor? of the county, August 7th, 1913. The contract for the eleulruliers was awarded to the Llewellyn Iron Works, of L03 Angeles; for the Installation: of wiring, conduits, etc., to the New-herry-Bendheim’ Company of Los An-gules and for the maintenance to the Souiueru vjaiiiorma. luisou CiUiupiiiij of Los Angeles.These contracts included the taking over of all lights on the boulevard both in Van Nuys and Gwens-month which were installed previously by the Suburban Homes Company. The other lights on the side streets in the two towns are to he iii/iiniained by the Suburban Homes Company.The system of lighting undertaken by the district under its first contract included 302 electroliers, and with the 5H in Van Nuys. the 22 on North Sherman Way and the 36 in Owensmoutli made a total of 419 electroliers.In the townsites of Van Nuys, Marian and Owensmouth, five-light electroliers were provided in the central pans and along the boulevard outside of the townsites and In the more re-moie sections the electroliers are of three-light design.The electroliers are all cast iron. The base is modeled after the Hill street posts hi Los Angeles and the tops like those on East Fifth street.On September 29th u contract was awarded by the supervisors for sixadditional two at VanNuys, two at Marinn and two at Owensmoutli. This increased the to tal to 42b posts. In addition to the lights installed by the district, two private electroliers were installed in front of the residence of H. J. Whitley and one in flt;*ont of the Otis residence, smith of Van Nuys. These electroliers will be maintained by the named gentlemen.A further contract for 188 lights along South Sherman Way and along the Ventura road (State highway) in the southern portion of the district was awarded by the supervisors October 20th. The awards for the electroliers and maintenance were to the same firms as on the first contract, but the installation for this work was awarded to the B. F. Kierullf Company of Los Angeles. The design of electroliers on thi3 section wus all three way and similar to those on Sherman Way. This conlract will increase the lolal uumber of electroliers In ihc district to 613. The posts along the hnulevard are staggered 331) feet apart and run about IS to a mile. The same distance will bo used on the work on South Sherman Way and the Ventura road.i:- The portion of the system which will be turned on tomorrow night at 7 o'clock and that already in operation includes about IS miles of im*|)1‘U I U(J a, .mU •* Xfci* iuu 1»U»lion contracted, about 12 miles, will make the iolnl lonsrth of lighted highways in the district 30 miles. The | Van Nuys lighting system is be most comprehensive and the most elaborate of any systems installed in the United States :ind no doubt of any in the world. The system when completed will provide a circuit of lighted highway thul is destined to he the most ! popular drive on I. of Los Angeles. I The celebration tomorrow night will j be held from the rotunda of the new i Johnston organ anrl piano factory. A i large crowd is expected to be present ' at the ceremony of turning on the ; lights.
