Claim of Lyceum Bureau Reduced in Squire Brenneman’s Court. Long Standing Controversy Settled to Satisfaction of All Parties Concerned. “Captain Jack”? Crawford, soldier, poet and author, gave the Courier- Crescent office a pleasant call Fri day afternoon while in Orrville in the interest of suit brought against him by the Coit Lyceum bureau for breach of contract. Proceed ings to the suit were instigated in Justice Brenneman’s court while the Captain was a number on the Smithville Chautauqua program last August. “Captain Jack’’ stated that he had been a victim of the bureau’s boy cotts for past ten years, the outcome of an attempt on their part, to take advantage of him on percentage for services rendered. The amount $239.77 claimed by the bureau against the defendant was reduced ‘by the Justice to a figure satis factory to both parties. The Cap tain had acknowledged an indebted ness to the bureau but a less amount than claimed by plaintiff. The case was finally brought to a head but postponed to this time to enable Mr. Crawford to gather witnesses from a distance. After hearing the testimony of both sides the Justice decided in favor of the defendant, ‘‘Captain Jack’’ was in deed in a happy mood over the vindication of a long standing cot roversy, and gave us a minute dis play of athletic ability, showing how he pitched and won a game of ball forty years ago, from the Athletics of Philadelphia. Several of the cap tain’s fingers gave evidence of hav ing been “banged.”’ Captain Crawford is anxious that Orrville people purchase the Smith ville -Chautauqua grounds, now for sale, and continue to hold the place ‘or use as heretofore. Several of our people were approached on the subject.
