By KENZIE WINSTEAD Times-Tribune Staff Writer A Laurel Circuit jury has awarded $906,000 in a malpractice suit against three Corbin physicians. jury awarded the sum to the estate agend of a 13-year-old irl, Kelly Thomason, who died at utheastern Kentuck Baptist Hospital (SEKBH) in 1982. Doctors Richard F. Park, Lee G. Durham and Bruce Barton, all general practitioners in Corbin, were found negligent in the death of Thomason. The jury broke down the share of liability in the girl’s death; SEEBH, 40 percent; Park, 40 percent; Barton, 15 percent; and Durham, 5 percent. The hospital will not have to pay any portion of the cdy, award because they reached an out of court settlement before the trial a ttorney Paul Braden, who represented the three doctors in the trial said, ‘‘We were disappointed, obviously.”’ A fourth doctor, Dr. Sharad Parulekar, was found free of liability in the case. Parulekar, also reached an out-of-court settlement before the trial began. The jury awarded $806,102.16 to the estate of Kelly Thomason; $650,000 compensatory damages for destruction of Thomason’s future power to earn money; $150,000 for pain and suffering she endured before her death; $2,525.16 in medical expenses and $3,577 in funeral costs. Thomason’s parents, Ken and Jea Thomason, were awarded $100,000 for the loss of their ae love and companionship. estate also asked for punitive pen from Park, which were denied. Attorney Sam Davies, Bar bourville, who represented the Thomasons, refused to comment on the award. The Thomasons filed suit against the doctors and the hospital after their daughter died in the Corbin hospital of respiratory arrest, three days aftering admitted for treatment of a sinus infection. During his closing statements Davies argued that gaps in medica records and net testimony by doctors pointed to negligence. Thomason was first treated at the hospital one week before she died after she fainted at home. The 13-year-old girl was taken to the hospital suffering from a fever, nosebleed, vomiting and headache. An emergency room physician diagnosed urinary tract infection. She was given antibotics and sent home and told to see her family doctor, Park, the next day.
