Hyte Center celebrates 34th anniversaryAbout 800 people, or more than one percent of Terre Haute's population, helped celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Charles T. Hyte Community Center last week.C. Delores Tucker was the keynote speaker. Her wide-ranging speech went from her persona! history in working for civil rights in the south to a fervent appeal for the audiencemembers to vote November 2 and to urge other persons to vote.Tucker is secretary of the State of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, a position she has filled since 1971. She is the highest-ranking black woman in this country's state governments.The Center was opened 34 years ago at 1331 DemingStreet, a city-owned building which had been remodeled by the Park Board.In 1970 HUD approved a Neighborhood Facilities grant of $500,000 for a new center and after $250,000 was raised in the community, approved, with the present Hyte Center completed in June, 1972.Programs and activities at Hyte Center include the following: Vigo County Legal Aid program, Vigo County Head Start program, Community Food and Nutrition program, Free Medical Clinic, Well Child clinics, library services, craft classes, sports and recreation, tutoring program, voter registration and Community Outreach program.
