LOCAL CLUB WOMEN HELD FIRST “AT HOME” TUESDAY AFTER NOON.—FIRST SOCIAL FUNC TION IN NEW CLUB HOUSE (By Myra Curtiss.)~ The Woman's [Improvement club held its first ‘at home” Tuesday in its beautiful new club house at Main and Eleventh streets. During the day over seventy mem bers from some of the best known women's clubs throughout this part of the state, as well as home friends of the members, were guests of the local club. Reception on Arrival The visiting ladies not coming by auto were met at the train by the club's representative, Mrs. F. J. Muel ler... Anjos were in waiting at the station to take the visitors to the club house from which point the start was made at 11 a. m. for the seeing Corona trip. This included the Grand Circular Boulevard, the C hase Drive and Lemonia Grove, one of Corona’s beauty spots. Mrs. R. D. Lamson being in charge of this par of the entertainment. Returning to the club house the guests were wel cmed by these ladies who form the ‘excutive board of the club but for the day acting in the capacity of recesion committee: Mmes. T. C. Janeson, W. J. Pentelow, O.C. Mc Mois, L. L. Andrews, F. J. Mueller, “ainson, W. H. Jameson and G. P. McCorkle. “Club Luncheon At 12:30 p. om. a dainty four course luncheon, was served to out of town guests and members of the Woman's’ Improvement club, covers being laid, for, over;one hundred apa. twenty-five. Mrs. Clarence - White was in charge of the luncheon and proved herself mistress of the situa tion, being ably assisted by members of the club. The tables were arranged on the south side of the auditorium and also in the pergola which was screened, in with foliage, giving the appear ance of a conservatory with its green ery, hanging baskets and graceful blooms. The decorative scheme it club colors, white and cold, owas a credit to those in charge, Alesdames W. oT. Jameson and G. W. Waterbury and was carried out in feathery chrysanthemums with were and there borders of smilax. The same colors prevailed throughout the ehuab house. The past and acting president of ecubs were asked to sit at the center table in the pergola. After singing the Doxoloby lead by R. T. Roberts of Los Angeles, the guests and home club ladies were seated at their respective places. . At each plate was a suitable souvenir in the shape of a card bearing a photograph of the club house and these words: “Reciprocity Day, October 2S, This, Corona.”’ The same color scheme was also used in the cakes afd ice. The fol lowing ‘ladies ‘presided in the impro vised dining room: Mesdames, Tate, Ross, Charles Scoville, Herbert Key, Reid, Donnelly, Hampton, Blair, Braasch and Grant Phillips. The repast over, the auditorium was cleared and seats taken for the program at which the club president, Mrs. T. C. Jameson, presided. Afternoon Program Rev. FL. W. Reynolds of this city gave the Invocation. ‘This was fol lowed by Mrs. Jameson's welcome which embodied historical facts re garding the club, the frst Inception of the club house, later its realiza tion, work now before the local wo men and proposed future work. This was followed up by concise facts as to what club work means to women, how it was done away with the old ladies of by-gone days and closed by asking a full co-operation of club members. The sentiment of the president's words called forth hearty applause. Mrs. W. J. Pentelow as chairman of the building committee read a con densed report covering fans as to how the building of the club house was made possible first, by the gen erous donation of the site by Mmes. EK. L. LaJoy and W. H. Jameson and further by their gift of $1500 to which W. H. Jameson added another one thousand dollars followed by the co-operation of club members. The recent cantata given by local talent under direction of Mrs. A. W. Bates made possible the club house as it now stands as a reduction in size was deemed necessary until one generously offered to raise what was required to complete the building ac cording to plans. The recording secretary, Mrs. JL.L. Andrews, read telegrams congratulat ing the Corona Tradies upon the com pletion of the club house c and ex pressing “regret at inability to be present. hese messages were from Mrs. K. C.
