Eegate, who livwl with her husband aud family on h -.mail ranch known aa Sunnyside. about three miles southeast of the city and east of Sanders beach was accidentally shot and died of the wounds about 7:30 o'clock.For some time Mrs. Eagnte has been bothered by a coyote that bos man-M««-d to steal a number of her chickens. Yesterday afternoon sbe noticed 11 coyote in the held tuid taking the Hhotguu from the ruck started across the field to wbcro her husband was working. On reaching this she laid lb.- gun on a box nt the top of the stop* and went tnio tlie cellar und wo* placing some fruit on tht* shelves. While stoopiug ovor to pick up a jar tin- gun fell from the box and discharged by striking the steps. The coDlents passed through her neck on the right side boring the jaw and *kull, and cutting numerous nr teriCT and veins while the shot lo-cntod In her neck and breast.On hearing the shot Mr. Eagate Started on a run for the cellar and reached the top of the steps leading to it in Lime to see bis wifo full to the fl.Hir mortally wounded. The sight drove him out of his mind and becoming frantic with fright and grief, be caught their two year old baby in hi* arms and ran to the borne of a utdghbor about a half a mile distant where he told of the accident The mdghbor convinced him that ho must l*iivc the child aud return to his Immv and get a doctor. They returned Ui the Eegate home and the neighbor came to town and summoned physician who immcdiatiy visit'd the scene of the tragedy, wherehe found Mrs. Legate in a bod ooodi-tion. The immense loos of blood bad so weakened her system that she was unable to recover from the first shock, and the ground on which sho lay was saturated six inches deep with her life's blood. She died about 7:30 o'clock last eveulng and her husband is prratrntod with grief.The old axiom, It nover rains but It pours, bolds good in this case for yesterday Esgnte received the news that his mother, who lives in Nebraska, was dying, and a short time ago, while Mrs. Eogatc wo^ visiting some relatives a thief entered their hurao aud stole a number of valuables.The fnneral will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock from the Methodist church. The remains will be interred In Forest cemetery under the direction of T. E. Medal, undertaker. The numerous friends of both Mr. and Mrs. Esgnte are shocked at the news of her tragic death.Rathbone Basket Social.Last evening the Rathbone sisters held a box aud basket social at Fraternal hall which wan attended by about GO persons. The affair was n sooinl aud fluauoial success and the lodge cleared about tfil. The boxes were auctioned off and brought as high as four dollars aud the contents • fleu justified a good price.A pleasant musical program had been arranged and was successfully carried out, after which the guests gathered around the table* in the dining room and proceeded to sample the contents of the purchases.
