ST. STEPHEN'S SUNDAY SCHOOL, DORSET ROAD.TESTIMONIAL THE SUPERINTEND ANT.. On Monday evening, at the Dorset-road School Rooms, the Rev. C. Campe, vicar, and the Rev, R* Adams, curate, of St. Stephen’s Church, South Lambeth, and the teachers and scholars, past and present, of the above school, with a large number of friends, met together, to present J. M. Thorne, Esq. (the Superintendent), on the occasion of his retirement, with an easy chair (with writing and reading-desk attached), together with silver salt cellars, and a case of silver fruit spoons, and sugar sifter. The chair bare the following inscription on a silver plate :~“This chair together with a presentation of silver plate, was given to John Mills Thorne Esq , by the clergy, teachers, and scholars, past and present, of St. Stephen’s Sunday School, South Lambeth, in testimony of their love and in appreciation of his labours among them as superintendent for a period of twenty-live years.—October 1880.”Mr. Thorne commenced Sunday School teaching in the year 1842, at the School of St. Mary the Less. The School was held in a room in High-street (then Fore-street), Lambeth, where he attended for many years. Then he had a class of boys at St. Michael’s Sunday School. He came to Dorset-street Sunday School in the year 1850.The Sunday School treat has been held yearly, without exception, in the grounds of Turret House, the residence of Mr. Thorne, which is about to be pulled down, that being the cause of his leaving the Sunday School aud parish.Miss Annie Thome was presented with a handsomely bound Bible, and Mr. Benjamin Thorne with a handsome silver pencil case, in recognition of their kind services as teachers iu the Sunday School.Great praise is due to MisS Powell and Mr. 0. P. Price for the part they took in getting up the testimonials.The Rev. C. Campe, who presided, in presenting the chair, spoke in very appropriate terms of the career of Mr. Thorne as a Sunday School worker, and told his hearers that they had been set a good example, and he hoped that the present teachers would follow in his steps. The rev. gentleman then presented to Mr, Thorne the chair, on behalf of the clergy, teachers, and scholars,Mr. Thatcher, after an appropriate address, presented the silver salt cellars, which he thought to be a very appropriate present,Mr. Price also addressed the meeting, iu the course of which he said that the teachers would not like Miss Annie Thorne and Mr. Benjamin Thorne to go away without showing them some mark of their esteem, whereupon he presented to Miss Thorne a Bible, and Mr. B. Thorne a silver pencil case.The Vicar also presented to Mr. Thorne a book, entitled “ French on Parables,” and hoped he would find comfort in reading it, as it was a book he valued very much.Mr. Thorne, in a very lengthy speech, thanked those who had contributed towards the testimonial, and assured them that he should always look hack with much pleasure on the happy hours ho had spent amongst them. He thanked them all for their kindness, and wished them all “ good bye.”The Rev. R. Adams offered a short prayer, and the meeting then terminated.
