BEAUMONT — Robert Lee Chargois, 31, of Beaumont, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday on a charge of murder with mali Cho was convicted of the 1973 murder of Roy Piraino, a Beaumont grocer who was shot once in the back of the neck during a robbery Chargois was tried on the charge last year, but after long hours of delibe ration, the jury deadlocked He was tried again and Thursday a second jury convicted him of murder with malice. The jury then deliberated two more hours and assessed the life sentence Chargois had earlier filed a writ of habeas corpus, asking that he be freed since he had been denied a speedy trial He has been in jail since May of 1974, but his writ was denied, and his case was set down for a special setting on the docket He entered a claim of double jeopardy, but the jury, when it convicted him Thursday, said they found Chargois had not been subjected to double jeopardy Chargois has 10 days in which to file a motion for a new trial before he is formally sentenced by the judge, and he decided to wait the 10 days He is appealing the denial of the writ of habeas corpus, and is expected to appeal the conviction.
