Fred Kohler, associated with wrestling for 50 years, was named Friday a member of the five-man athletic board of the Illinois State Department of Registration and Education. Kohler, who lives at 2 Stuart on Oxford, Plum Grove Village, Rolling Meadows, promoted wrestling in the Chicago area and in fact all over the world from 1928 to 1962. He first engaged in the hand to hand contact sport in 1917 at the Isham Memorial YMCA in Chicago. Later, when he was captain of the Lane Technical High School football team, he attributed his ability to play the full 60-minute game without in jury to endurance built up through wrestling. He believes his discussions with the coach led to the addition of wrestling to the high school athletic pro gram. Kohler said the five-man state athletic board controls profes sional wrestling, enforces rules and regulations, appoints ref erees and officials, and super vises conduct of professional wrestling shows. Since retiring from active promotion of wrestling, Kohler has set up two corporations located in Rolling Meadows, Custom Rubber Molders and Kohler and Besser Electronics Inc. He has resigned from ac tive management of both cor porations and formed the con sulting engineering firm of Fred Kohler Associates.
