KILLED 2 INJURED CRIME OUTBURSTPolice Car Runs Down Young Boy in Chasing Murder BanditsOne man killed, one seriously cut, and a boy probably fatally injured was the tragic toll of the hard times crime wave which now seems to be sweeping Indiana Harbor. John Schweiger, aged 25, was shot to death at the busy Fir-Michi-gan avenue intersection by one of two bandits who sought to commandeer his car.Little Melvin Wiersbe, aged six years, sustained a fractured skull when struck by a car searching* for the death bandits and Geor go Connors of 3917 Grand blvd., wars slashed above the eyes last night by a lone Negro bandit who robbed him in an alley near 135th and Elm street.SCHWEIGER REFUSESJohn Schweiger was driving .from his work at the Inland Steel company to his room at 3607 Grand blvd., at 4:10 o'clock yesterday, afternoon and had stopped at Nagdeman's clothing store at Michigan ave., and Fir street. He was just getting into his car when two young men walked to the machine and one of them threatened him with a gun.Schweiger refused to accompany them and. one of the bandits fired, striking the local man in the groin. He died an hour later at St. Catherine’s hospital.One of the bandits fled along the alley in back of the Western Union telegraph office while the other ran in back of Barker's Furniture company.Officer James Mihalik was on the scene within a few moments and in company with Edward D. Vance of 3833 Hemlock street. They searched the neighborhood for trace of * the fleeing murderers. ■ •LAD STRUCK DOWNThe car turned ^from 135th street, into an alley near Grand boulevard, and little Melvin Wiersbe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Wiersbe of .3425 Grand boulevard, stood in the path of the machine an'd was struck down.The little lad was rushed to St. Catherine's hospital where it wae learned he is suffering from a fracr tured skull. His condition is very grave and physicians. hold slight hopes for his recovery.The same bandits who shot down Schweiger are believed to be the men whc1 weeks ago terrorized motorists in Gary in similar crimes.Schweiger was a single man and his body will be shipped to Hogen, Wis., for burial.George Connors of 3917 Grand boulevard, was attacked by a lone Negro holdup man last night on 135th street near Elm and was forced into an alley where the bandits slashed him over both eyes with a knife.Connors was robbed of a watch and $15 in cash and was left lying in an alley where he was found by William Lynch of 3519 Elm street, who was driving his car into his garage. Lynch saw a colored man leaving the alley as he drove up.Connors was given medical attention and taken to his home.
