BREGKENRiOGE : PASSES AWAY AT BERKELEY\ Dr. William Watson Brecken-! ridge, former pastor of the Pres-5 byterian church of this city, attorney . and prominent in the Presbyterian I denomination, passed away last Friday, October 21, at 2314 Haste [ street, Berkeley, following a long [ illness.? Dr. Breckenridge resigned his pas-r torate of the Presbyterian church » here a year ago last spring on account of failing health, and went to j» Berkeley hoping that a year’s rest would restore his strength. He ’ gradually failed and for many r months has been confined to his room. He was hopeful to the last that he would be able to resume his work.Dr. Brecken ridge was born in i Hopeville, 111., July 13, 1865 and• was the son of Rev. Hugh and Mary• Watson Breckenridge. His mother,: Mary Watson, .was the great grand-: daughter of Dr. John McMillan, one ; of the founders of the Presbyterian church in western Pennsylvania. His cousin, Rev. Watson Hays, also a great grandson of Dr. McMillan,• has for forty years been a leader of the Presbyterian mission work in China.Dr. Breckenridge received his college degree from Wheaton College, 111. He planned to study law, but after his graduation, ^he decided to prepare for the ministry. He was graduated with honors from Ober-lin School of Theology in 1891 and spent a year among the lumbermen of Wisconsin. He then entered Yale university to study for his Ph.D. degree. While in Yale he filled the pulpit of the church in Washington, Conn. It was there that he met Miss Grace Hickox, who later became his wife.Dr. Breckenridge was called to the pastorate of the First Presbyterian church of Hartford, Conn. He remained in this parish for thirteen years. He never forgot his inclination for the law and during this and succeeding pastorates helpedmany youths by sharing his knowledge with them. IAfter leaving the church in Hart-jford Dr. Breckenridge spent a year in McCormick Theological Seminary; in Chicago and was then called to ! the First Presbyterian church at Tuscon, Arizona, where he remained for seven years. It was during his pastorate that the present church edifice at Tuscon was built. During these years he saw how a knowledge of law would be an aid to a minis-!ter, and he went from Tuscon to theUniversity of California where he was given his degree in law in 1916, and mas adraiLted to the bar the same year.In 1916 Dr. Breckenridge accepted a call to the Presbyterian church in this city where he remained for ten years. A delegate to the general assembly of the Presbyterian church several times, Dr. Breckenridge had looked forward to attending the annual session held in San Francisco last May but was unable to leave his room at that time, A number of his, loyal friends from different parts of the country crossed the bay at that time to greet him.The deceased Is survided by his widow, Mrs. Grace Hickox Breckenridge, and three sisters, Rev. Juanita Breckenridge Bates of Ithaca, N. Y.« also of the class of ’91 Oberlln Theological Seminary; Mrs. Clara Breckenridge Fritz of Rio, 111.; and Mrs. Mavy Breckenridge Petrie of New Windsor, 111. He also leaves seven nephews and four nieces.Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon in Piedmont. Br. Frank M. Silsley, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Oakland, conducted the services, assisted by Dr. Stanley Armstrong Hunter, pastor of St. John's Presbyterian church of Berkeley. His body was taken to Washington, Conn., his former home, for burial.Memorial services for Dr. Breck- • enridge were held last Sunday morning at the Presbyterian church in this city, Charles Kasch and J. H. Kirkpatrick spoke on the life and character of the man. Dr, H. N. Fifer delivered a sermon on “There Is No Death. H. T. Harvey was the soloist.CHRISTIAN CHURCHBible school 9:45 a. m. L. H.
