We arrived at Y at 12:00 P. M. Sept. 6 and stayed in Bivouac’s for ten days, then left Y Sept. 8 for Z, through more rain and mud. But the mud and rain was more for our benefit than hindrance because we were out of airplane observations. We arrived at Z Sept. 10th at ten P. M. and rested until morning of FRIDAY 13 then went over the. top.Just before we went over I happened to think of the date, FRIDAY 13 and it made me feel a little creepy. Once we got started we sure went over. The bombardment started at one A. M. and lasted four hours and then our barrage fire started and we went over under it.We were about half way out when two Boche machine guns opened up on us right where two musicians, myself and another fellow were. We immediately fell to the ground and began crawling on our stomachs. We didn’t have to go far before their position was signalled and our artillery, well they just blew H—out oi them. We reached the first line i reaches and as most of our wounded who were few, had been carried in, my companion musician and I set up a Boche machine gun and turned it on the retreating men but they went .*0 fast that they were soon out of sight and then it wasn’t very exciting. We then picked up rifles and went on. Our column went forward aboutthree kilometers (about 2Vs mile-) beyond our objective when the command was given to halt. We were relieved about 8:00 a. m.Just think how weak the Boche are for in three hours we had pushed them 18 kilometers (13 miles).
