Having already a diploma from the Ohio Medical College of Cincinnati, which he passed with honors, and gifted with distinguishing talent as he is, we have no doubt he will return a bright scholar, an honor to himself and his family, and an ornament to his people.Dr. Mayer, before leaving, will lecture on Sunday evening, nt 8 o’clock, in the HnJl of the Alleiaania, on Bar Cochba, and read soveral of bis best poems. Nest, he intends to lecture in Louisville, Chicago, Milwaukee, Rochester, X. Y., and Hartford, Conn., where his parents reside. We hope and expect our friendi will turn out in mass and give the young poet such encouragement as he deserves, and will enable him to achieve his purpose. Every good citizen should support young and active talent, for the honor of his people and the benefit of humanity. Adath Israel, (corner of 8th and Walnut,) held onCincinnati.—Again, several houses formerly open for the transaction of business on Sabbath were closed on Sabbath last, for the first time. If it continue so, our point will he gained in a few short months. We will try to have, in our next issue, the names of all the houses which do no business on Sabbat)!.—The hospital association, at the last meeting, October 23, adopted a resolution to build a new hospital. A committee was appointed to raise the necessary funds, estimated at $20,000. The officers elected forthe ensuing year are the following gentlemen:A. AUB, President;*Hyman Moses, Vice-President;Dr. Lilienthal, Secretary;*X. Mendensohn, Treasurer;*James Lowxuan,as it happens this year, entailing perceptibly in legitimate business competition, it is prompted to desecrate even the lawful days instituted by God. He therefore deems it salutary to the interest of religion, to abrogate that which tends to its detriment. He would pursue the method of the surgeon who amputates the mortified limb, in order to prevent infection of its sound fellow and the destruction of the whole body.The Rev. Dr. is in favor of whatever manifests life and vigor of time honored customs, and thus resisted the rescinding of the second day wn a*nf though urged by a number of members. He is adverse to radical reforms, being convinced that moderate measures best, serve the great end. The zv aniDD were solemnized in the temple with unusual devotion, 'and persons, who were not seen in God’s house for years, were seemingly spell-bound from the beginning of divine service to the close of it. Cantor, choir, music, and above all the eloquent and stirring exhortations of the Rev. minister contributed to this happy result. The sermons of Rosh harkaaah and Yom Kip par will shortly appear in print, at the request of the members and many outsiders, who have a subscription on foot for this purpose, .a thousand having already been subscribed. The old feuds and differences are all reconciled, and a spirit of harmony and union prevails. The congregation contemplates purchasing a more spacious and fitted building to meet the increase of members.Steps arc preparing to consumate this purchase at a not distant day. The or*r *pn Congregation will probably acquire the Rev. Widdauer, a young theologian of talents, who delivered several probationary sermons. The last of these met with great approbation nod insures his appointment temporarily. It is generally thought that experience in inistry will render him a very ablethepreacher.
