It was an Intelligence which carried with It the fact of a vital and momentous loss to the whole people. It was a knell which sounded the unexpected passing of a masterful soul.Of virile and dynamic force, equipped with an intellect at times dazzling in its brilliancy, cogent in reasoning, dominant in debate, the subject of these lines was endowed prodigally with those elements which characterize and which distinguish the born leader.During a life covering three score and five years many honors had come to the father of our next governor. Offices, state and federal, rmsltions of distinction and of trust, had been Showered upon him. And in each in-the first families of colonial Virginia. A gentleman by every right, both of tradition and of bloodl his distingtttabed abilities added lustre to a life which stood forth a logical cutmlnationi of long lines of patrician ancestry.The diversified talents of the great Virginian, now dead, were ^divided among the legal, legislative and literary fields. As sn orator he was probably at his best in debate, and as a debator he recognized no master.It is probably true that realization of anything like physical fear was altogether foreign to Mr. Byrd. And while he was regarded as aggressive in action ,he fought only in the open. He possessed that admiration which all men pay instinctively to courage. Equal with his, courage was his utter independence of thought.But there was an attribute possessed by the distinguished Virginian more pleasing to memory than the talents we have rehearsed. It was that sense cf loyalty to friendship which bound men to Mr. Byrd through lifh. For many years it was my pri-CROafi ROAM, Vs., Oct. 2*.—Mrs. Harsh Jane Fletcher, widow of James Fletcher, died at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mi’s. Charles filrhtugh, about three miles southeast of Capon Bridge last Thurs-day^BHifcning. after an illness of several months.Mrs. Fletcher was 83 years of age, and had spent practically all her life in thie community, and was highly respected by all #vho knew her. fibs is survived by the following sons and daughters'. R. C. Fletcher, of this community, and 0. C. Fletcher, Mrs, Nimrod Albaugh. of near Capon Bridge; Mrs. Bertie Oates, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Mrs. Charles Sir-baugh, of near Capon Bridge.Friends assembled at the home at 11 o'clock Saturday morning,-when ft brief service was conducted by the Rev. C. H. Anderson, after which the body was taken to Fairview Church, by Funeral Director B/ A. Qlfflo, of Cpon Bridge, where the funeral services were ©Inducted by the Iter-Mr. Anderson.Although the weather was very inclement. quite a number of people assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to one who hkd been their friend and neighbor for many years.Those who acted as pallbearers were J.
