1st Ready for Halloween — Becky Dawson can hardly wait for the great day when she and her sister can celebrate Halloween with their decorated pumpkins. Photo by Mildred Smith ITCHEN a QUEEN, By Mildred Smith The Kitchen queen we in troduce this week is one of those very busy young homemakers who is involved in a multitude of activities, Mrs. Arnold (Kathy) Dawson who has been a Daily Times correspondent from the Grand Meadow area for the past two year. She attempts to keep the newspaper office informed on church and neighborhood hap penings in her area. Active in Meadow Star United Methodist Church and the WSCS she just recently retired from teaching nursery Sunday School class. She has helped with the Christmas program the past two years and was Bible School director this past year, a position she will fill for next year as well. She also sings in the ladies sextette, ‘Annie and Kathy are interested in all types of outdoor sports, are members of the Rocking K Saddle Club, Kingsley. Arnie is president. They enjoy horseback riding, boating and water sports. Annie also actively participates in the church call club. Kathy enjoys all types of crafts, embroidery and has done a 72 x 102 cross stitch tablecloth and a 50 x 72 lazy daisy embroidered tablecloth. She took tailoring in adult education and enjoys .She also does ink embroidery is beginning ceramics, makes candles, does knitting and crocheting. Project under way now is making an ABC quilt for Becky. She chews for herself and both daughters Becky and Beverly. Beverly 7, attends Kingsley-Pierson school. Although Kathy says they are mostly “meat and potato” eaters she likes to try out new recipes. A small garden, a big yard and helping with field work when needed are other activities that keep this housewife busy. Kathy will be remembered as the daughter of the late John Smith and Mrs. Smith of Meriden. John was teacher and ‘coach for Meriden and Meriden- Cleghorn schools for many years. Mrs. Smith now lives in LeMars. This winter, the Smith family has the rare treat of honoring their grandfather Smith of Missouri on his 101st birthday anniversary. Here are Kathy's recipes: HAMBURGER CASSEROLE 2 lb. ground beef 2.C soft breadcrust fre Fenehos 1% C flour 1% t vanilla %2 C cocoa Mot salt X4 t baking powder Xot soda Cream margarine, sugar, egg and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add remaining ingredients, blend at low speed until dough forms (about 1 minute). Dough will be wee Shape into one inch balls, place two inches apart on angreased cookie sheet. Push 1 maraschino cherry halfway into each ball. Prepare frosting and use immediately. Use it. frosting over cherry. Bake frosted cookie at 350 for 8 10 minutes, until puffy. Store tightly covered. Slim Jim” FROZEN POTATOES 802. SIZE 1C (6 of. pkg.) chocolate chips or mint chocolate chips. ‘2 C sweetened cow milk, not evaporated variant 1 to 1% t maraschino cherry juice. Melt the chocolate pieces with condensed milk over low heat. Use a small heavy saucepan, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Add remaining ingredients, stir until smooth. Larrabee Society Get-Together In Gould Home Mrs. Raymond Gould hosted the Get-Together Birthday Club at her home Monday. Honored on their birthdays were Mrs. J. H. Kintigh, Mrs. Harry Kintigh and Mrs. Jim Anderson. Following an informal evening of needlework, the hostess served a dessert tray lunch, ‘Team Bridge In Crary Home Larrabee Team Bridge met for an afternoon luncheon in the home of Mrs. Corwin Crary w'** Mrs. Charles Meloy as guest. Winning team was Mrs. George Wilkie, Mrs. Alfred Boldt, Mrs. Meloy ,and Mrs. C. Crary. Next meeting will be in two weeks with Mrs. Boldt. Rebekah Tea In Cochrane Home Rebekah Tea was held the evening of Oct. 21 in the home of Mrs. George Cochrane with Gladys Grayson as guest. Lap robes were worked on for the 100F home at Mason City. HY-VEE, Cherokee Void After Oct. 31 “A west Pac FROZEN STRAWBERRIES 19 ° Officials Study Deaths of Two Iowa Women Karen Goers OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — Using a metal detector, law men here Monday found more shell casings near the body of Karen Ann Goers, 23, who was one of two young women slain in separate incidences in Iowa this past week. Mahaska County Sheriff Dave Reese said Monday night that four 22 caliber shells were found by use of a metal detec tor during the day. Investigators had previously found two spent shell casings and an unspent cartridge. Miss Goers’ body was found Sunday morning in a ditch four miles northeast of here after search party had been orga nized by friends of the family. Reese said the woman died of an undetermined number of bullet wounds to the head. Miss Goers was last seen alive about 3 a. m. Friday, re portedly getting into a car driv en by a man in downtown Os Kalenes, “We're not holding anybody, Reese said Monday night. “We don’t have a thing on it yet in that respect. Karen Streed CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — No new developments in the death of Karen Streed, 21, of Cedar Rapids were released by authorities here Monday night. A Cedar Rapids housewife, Mrs. Streed’s body was found floating in a stream near High ‘Amana Sunday. She had been missing since last Tuesday, when she told fel low employes at the American Optical Co., here she intended to hitchhike to Iowa City where her husband, Ronald, is a stu dent. Cause of death has not been released by officials. An autop sy was scheduled at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
