Gardner of Midland will lead Texas volunteers in the New March of Dimes next .Janu-arv.byThe appointment to head the state’s campaign against birth defects, arthritis, and polio wasannounced in New York by BasilO’Connor, president of the National Foundation,“The New March of Dimes has come to symbolize a compassionate way to give help and courage to the stricken and to makethe nation a safe and healthy place for our children,” O’Connor said.Gardner has served as chairman of the Midland County Chapter of the National Foundation since 1953, and was select ed as Midland’s outstanding Youha Man of 1955 for his workactive in March of Dimes campaigns and has served as state advisor for women’s activities. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner have two children — Edwin Jr., 13 and Glynda Gail, 10.In accepting the appointment, Gardner pointed to the vitallyimportant objectives of the 1901 New March of Dimes and stated, “Birth defects are the largest unmet childhood medical problems in the United States today. Arthritis is the leading cause ofcrippling, disabling more people than any other chronic disease.
