A. Hutchinson, secretary of the state Democratic committee, announced.Hard, Bat Fair, Fighter W. D. Cardwell said: One of Virginia’s leading men is gone. ’Dick’ Byrd was able, loyal, fearless—a hard, but fair, fighter—a generous winner j and a good loser. He has been my friend for many years. When he first became a member of the House of Delegates, he it was who, in a very handsome speech, put my name before the Democratic caucus for speaker of the House. Recogniziug his outstanding ability as a lawyer, I made him chairman of the important committee for courts of justice, although it was his first session.“I was criticised for tliia by some of my newspaper friends, who said it was without precedent in Virginia, but before the session was over, they took back their criticism and praised Mr. Byrd for the good work he was doing. He succeeded me as speaker.“I am deeply grieved to hear of his death and extend my heartfelt sympathy to his distinguished family.Pride of the Assembly E. C. Fdlks said: From 1906 to1912, inclusive, the Hon. Richard Evelyn Byrd was the pride of the General Assembly of Virginia. If It was, known he was to speak the gallery find the floor was filled by all classes of people, and often not half could be accommodated. It was the same thing In the courthouses In the big cases. He never disappointed in this regard. He swept everything before him. Cannot say that the opposition was cheerful to face him with his flow of wit, his knowledge of his subject, his truly, great ability, genius,‘‘But I krijjw something better than all this In regard to him, to suffering he was Intensely sympathetic, a great heart, kind and generous, worthy of his great name.!fnptinyetWrmoMb1beNo.RaimoChidotatingNelilyInIin tim iod age Llo che nes mai S ton the; lid, retj her ton, Wo S for apei timi som It two vive I Eli* Woi grer]T!redWasforwillmenMrelawillsenT1funeMis?ingti•inirt
