L.In whirlwind finish last Saturday the Fourth Liberty loan drive closed by boosting Parker over the top, ex- Duhe, Frankceeding its quota by nearly one-third.The subscriptions when totaled amounted to $23,800, while our quota was $18,000. Therefore Parker went over the top by $5,000, which is not so worse considering local financial10030020050505015050505050100200conditions.The committeeworked hardthroughout the closing week and actual results began to materializeFriday and Saturday. Few, if anyone, were overlooked, and while the committee had a few refusals on thepart of some who claimed to have bought bonds outside of Parker, these particular cases are being investigated for the purpose of verifying these statements. The largest individual subscription was made by Joseph Craig, a* kminer employed at the Empire-Ari-zona Cons. Copper company. When accosted by the committee, Mr. Craig only took a few minutes in which to consult his bank book for the purpose of ascertaining his balance, which he found to be approximately $500. He then silently calculated how much stronger he could go over and have his bank balance, and turning to the members of the committeehe calmly said:“Put me down for $1,000 worth ol these bonds, and I will give you a check for $500 as partial payment.” When good old Joe Craig, who Is just about a million per cent American. made this announcement, the lady members of the committee could hardly refrain from giving him a bear hug. However, they thanked him with tears in their eyes, when they realized how much Joe is doing and has done toward standing back ' of our boys over there.Joe Craig is over 73 years of age and works as hard as any miner atthe Empire and he is putting his entire savings into government securities toward doing his bit. When the Third Liberty loan committee visited Joe a few months ago he invested his entire bank balance amounting to $300 in bonds of that issue, and since that time he has purchased about $150 in War Savings Stamps While he is past the fighting age, Joe says he is not too old to work and save his money for the boys who are braving Hun bullets and shedding their life blood for free America. In giving his entire earnings to the cause of liberty, Joe Craig is setting an example of patriotism worthy ofemulation by every true American workman. There were many others who subscribed and who increased their original subscriptions who are deserving of much praise, because it is going to take real saving for many of them to complete their payments.Great credit should be given the members of the liberty loan committees for their untiring efforts in sending Parker over the top.* Chairman Marsh didn't, overlook any possible chance to increase the amount of Parker’s subscription to the utmost, and the members of the Woman’s Committeeare worthy of special mention for their work during thecampaign.Following is the complete list of subscribers to the Fourth Liberty loan in Parker:Prtrkei Valley Bank.Craig, Joseph ............................1,000Standard Oil Company ........ 1,000Raney, Celia ..............................Duclos, August F....................... 7 5eUpstill, Frank .......................... 600Ewing, Frank ......................500Irving, George ...»........................ 350Englp, C. Neilson isreported to have gone into a poolhall where Liberty loan posters were displayed and make remarks derogatory to the government. He was arrested and reported to the federal ! authorities at Phoenix. The remarks were not sufficient to consti-tute an offense under the law and | Nelson was discharged. Irate citizens took up the matter and organized a posse, which took the man to the outskirts of town and gowned him in a dress suit of tar and feathers. He was started on his way from somewhere to nowhere and told to never come back. He may be going yet.rj‘Both 1 •nore a
