utmost exertion* to induce the geneial government to make tuch a treaty.The want** and the just claim* of the people of Portage count/ to increased mail accommodations, have been hitherto most shamefully neglected and the undersigned if elected will endeavor to procure the let-| ting of a contract for a mail as often a* once a week and oftener. if possible from Fort W innebago aud from Marquette county to the county seat of Portage, and from thence up the river to Big Bull Falls and if possible as far up as Warren’s Mills, as also the establishment of Post Offices at Shaurette, (Steven’s Point) Trading Post, Little Bull Falls, Eauclair, Big Bull Falls, Point Washington, Roche Eerie, and at such other points as the wants of the people shall indicate.The people of Portage county are subjected to a very serious tax and great inconvenience in being compelled to go to Mineral Point to transact any business they may have at the Land Office, and it is believed that not on)y the convenience of the people, but the interetts of the Government would be promoted by a division of the Mineral Point District, and the establishment of a new Land Office at some suitable point in the pinery, and this subject will receive the requisite attention from the undersigned if he should be elected.There are doubtless oiher subjects involving your interests which have not beer* noticed ; and the undersigned has only to say that all matters affecting the interests of his constituents, whether of a public or private nature when brought to his notice, shall receive his unremitted attention, should it be the pleasure of his fellpw-citizena to elect him to represent those interests at the sent of the National Government.Very Respectfullv, Your Ob’t Serv’t.,A, HYATT SMITH.Janesville, Oct. 2, 1848.
