Jeffersonville—Charles E. Hammell, of Cincinnati, with the goverment board of engineer?, was here Tuesday to inspect the government levee which, with the addition of temporary works two feet high, barely sufficed last spring to keep the flood out of Jeffersonville and thereby maintained open the only j gateway to the south between Pittsburgh and Cairo. A bill has been introduced in congress by Representative Cox to appropriate $40,000 for the improvement of the levee, the object being the protection of the quartermaster’s depot.The question has been referred to the army board of engineers for recommendation. Hammell said he would recommend raising ard strengthening the levee and facing it with riprap.
