The first three statements are taken trom the United States censuses, which, however, excluded some merely mechanfcl employments, included in the last. But taking either statement* it is plain that the industry of Cincinnati has doubled in the last ten years. No such a development of industry will be found in any other city, but that development will be doubled also in the next ten years, if persons of capital and enterprise in the city will look round and see what is wanting. If the exposition °hows the positive side what Cincinnati now does, it shows also what Cincinnati does not do, and perhaps that is quite as important. Where are the manufactures of glass, of china, of cotton, or even of wool? There is one cotton factory in Cincinnati. If fhsre are any others they are imalL But Cincinnati is one of the very best points in the country for the manufacture of ootton. Cotton and food are both cheaper than in New England. One difficulty, we imagine, is the want of the peculiar kind of labor employed in New England; but our thrifty German people would soon come into this business if they had any inducement foe it. Where are our large woolen mills? Small ones we have *u and around the city, but to no great extent. Manufactures of cloths and blankets can be just as well carried on in the vicinity of Cincinnati as in New England. There is water power on the Little Miami—if water power be desirable—to carry/ any amount of machinery. We met a gentleman from Philadelphia who paid two millions of doliara one year for Ohio wool, much of which was manufactured in Philadelphia. Why not have woolen‘mills on a large scale on theMiami?
