exposition. An old citizen and manufacturer said to ns that ho thought he knew everything done in Cincinnati, bat here were many things he did net know of. For ourselves, we felt like the women la an auction— where everything Is a “bargain.” We wanted to buy everything, steam engines and all, and keep the whole as a museum. Yea, let the exposition be permanent—in the sense of having one every year, A city should never forget that to be well advertised Is as necessary for a town as for a tradesman. The individual knows nothing outside of his little personal world but what he sees in the newspaper. The newspaper makes everything which concerns opinions,. leads taste, informs business and direotS commerce. The exposition is a great newspaper. It is read by half a million of peo« pie. It is transferred to the printed newspaper and it goes round the world and tails the world to admire, and the buyers to come, and Commerce to flow thither. That is what a city wants. But Urn exposition really means, as we hay© said, that Cincinnati is a grand development of industry. But do any of the mechanics and visitors at the exposition really know how rapid and powerful that development is ? Take a single fact and refleqf upon it. The value cf product* in Cincinnati In 1870 is equal to that of the whole State of Ohio in 1860! The value of products of Cincinnati in 1870 is 9120,000,000, and that is just the vain# of the whole industrial products of the State in 1860. Take that fact and think upon it. Recollect that in that time (ten years) we have had a great war, which was quite as disastrous to . Cincinnati, for a time, as to any other place. Industry was deranged, machinery stopped, and men thrown out of employment. Yet see the recuperative power of this city, and its immense strides at the present moment. It may be worth while to look back and see how Cincinnati has moved on in its industrial career. Take the figures ior the county (for we have them complete, and the proportion out of Cincinnati is small):V*lue of Product*.
