Coming off a two-year period which brought more than $2.2 million in Urban Renewal funds to the City of Cullman, Director Kenneth Speegle said Monday he anticipates spending another $2 million in development during 1973. According to Speegle, Cullman has received more HUD funds during that span than in the past 10 years. The money, including grants and Urban Renewal funds, was used exclusively for land and project development. Another $250,000 is also ex pected to be appropriated by Urban Renewal for the development of the Nesmith Park Complex in East Cullman. Funds left over from that project will be used for the development of six additional parks. “Right now our main goal is finishing the Nesmith Com plex,”’ said Speegle. ‘“‘We hope to complete the entire project by next year. This money for the parks should take care of the completion.’’ Speegle noted the $2 million will be used for the Fourth Street Project, which is four laning U.S. 278 from Tucker’s Store (in East Cullman) to Interstate 65. “The city will alo have to come up with services-in-kind as their share in this project,” added Speegle. “There is really no use in filing applications for additional funding until after Christmas since it is an election year. We are making preparations now though. “People must realize that all this money is appropriated from HUD. But, once several of our projects near completion, everyone can see what Urban Renewal can do to this town,” said Speegle.
