Sister of Mrs. Carrothers, Victim of Auto Accident While Driving From Idaho Home to CoronadoRobert Donald Carrothers, jr., son of Robert Donald Carrothers and Charlotte Kate (Neilson) Carrothers, was killed Friday evening while en route to his home in Coronado from Los Angeles.The national junior singles tennis champion was driving with three fellow students from the University of Southern California when the car blew a tire in the Rose Canyon Road.Carrothers, and Warren Beman, 18, of Los Angeles, were riding in the rumble seat when John S. Ross, 18, 4030 Sunset Boulevard, San Diego, the driver of the car, lost control and crossed the center safety island, plunging down a 15-foot incline. The car struck a railroad signal pole, turned over fbur times and landed on its wheels in a gully. The occupants of the rumble seat were thrown from the car, fracturing Car-rothers’ skull and crushing his chest. He died two hours later at the County hospital. Beman received a broken leg and possible internal injuries, it was reported at county hospital. Ross and the fourth student, Dever Button, 19, Riverside, suffered bruises and lacerations.Bob was bom in Pocatelk* Idaho. For many years we have sat by him, watching his superb tennis, knowing and loving him. Only yesterday he was our student body president, our winner of Ink trophies, our national champion. He won the National Junior Singles championship at Culver, Indiana, immediately thereafter and the doubles championship with Douglas Woodbury as partner. He took the Pacific Southwest singles title at Los Angeles, September 22. He was picked by sports writers as an outstanding star.In his high school career he was a valued player in basketball and president of the student body in his senior year, 1940. He had planned to go out for basketball at the University of Southern California as well as tennis.Bob leaves two sisters, SaraJane, Mrs. Robert Waldie, and Harriet, Mrs. Albert Charles, and a brother, John Gaylord Carrothers.Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2.30 in the Little Church of the Roses, with burial in Glen Abbey Memorial Park.Attending the services were Mr. Carrothers' sisters, Mrs. C. H. Archibald of Coronado, and Mrs. C. F. Stanley of Eagle Rock, his nephews, R. E. Archibald and Charles Archibald of Coronado and Frank Stanley of Eagle Rock, Mr. C. E. Stanley, Mrs. FrankStanley.Pallbearers were Buddy Ingle, George Ravenscroft and Herbert Hakes of Coronado, Harper Ink jr. of San Diego, Frederick Schroeder and Douglas Woodbury of Glendale and Los Angeles.Out of town friends in attendance: Mr. Perry Jones of Los Angeles, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Weingartner of Los Angeles.Tragedy struck the bereaved family a second time when Mrs. Carrothers* sister, Mrs. Harry Collins of Pocatello Idaho, was killed in an automobile accident 25 miles south of her home. She was on her way to Coronado, with Mr, Collins, who sustained serious injuries.Unaware of the death of his mother, Carl Valentine of Oakland arrived with Mrs. Valentine Saturday afternoon at the Carrothers home. He left for Pocatello by plane later in the day.Mrs. J. C. Thom, sister of Mrs. Carrothers of Buffalo, Wyoming, is expected in Coronado this week. Mrs. Thom is the wife of Comdr. J. C. Thom, U. S.
