Cotton now “is used in some ‘sixty five basic industrial forms of man ufacture, but a new important use recently has been added which, al thought still in the experimental stage, promises to offer additional outlet for this commodity. Cotton fabric of suitable character, is now being tested in a practical way on one highway in Texas and on sev eral highways in the Carolinas, Georgia and Louisiana. Combined with asphalt and stretched over a gravel foundation, and then covered with another layer of asphalt and crushed limestone, a comparatively cheap road surface resulted on a stretch of State Highway No. 3, near Gonzales. The experiment in under direction of Gibb Gilchrist, State Highway Engineer. Cost of such a road is estimated at $4,226 a mile or 36c a square yard. Whether this new type of road will come into general use in the building of cardinal highways re mains to be seen, but for secondary roads it is said to offer a substant ial improvement over most other
