K.New York, Oct. 23.—Reports from American League headquarters that the members of the Boston Red Sox, world's champions, and other American League players may be fined for playing games after the close of the regular season has evoked a vigorous protest from the Baseball Players’ Fraternity.I Pres. David L. Fultz stated here today that the fraternity does not recognize the right of organized basebll to fine its members for such an alleged offense, and further pointed out that players were acting well within their legal right in taking part in such games. The fraternity cannot recognize the right of organized baseball to fine players for taking part in games after the season is over and after their contracts have expired,” said President Fultz. The relation of player and magnate is purely contracual and gives no basis for the principal of paternalism, which the- magnates now attempt to inject into it. In addition, representatives of organized baseball have for years conducted post- season trips in which they shared the receipts, and it is difficult for the players to see the distinction between these trips and the ones ‘the magnates now seek to abolish. If the national commission thinks the alleged offense of sufficient importance, and the act would-be a wiBe and dignified one, they have every right to withhold the world’s series emblems from the Red Sox, but as far as fining them is concerned that is an entirely different matter.”
