THE BROWNSVILLE HERALD The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office will hold its annual Petals on the Lake ceremony Wednesday to recognize survivors of domestic violence. The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Dean Porter Park Outdoor Pavilion, 501 E. Ringgold St. During the ceremony, petals will be tossed into the resaca in honor of the survivors. One of the guest speakers will be Mary Esther Galvan, the moth er of dating violence vic tim Tiffany Galvan, who was killed by her ex boyfriend. The Cameron County and District Attorney Domestic Violence Unit will also honor first responders in domestic violence cases, including officers, detec tives and magistrates who deal with this com munity epidemic on a daily basis. The event coincides with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is to raise public awareness of domestic violence. In Texas, there were 187,811 incidents of family violence in 2005, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In addition, there were 120 homi cides as a result of domestic violence in 2006, the latest year for which statistics are available. Of those 120 homicides, 43 percent were committed by a spouse and 24 percent were committed by a dat ing partner. Six children were killed in Texas as a result of domestic vio lence in 2006.
