6 The Collegian: Thursday, October 23,1975Editoria!Gambles Mill: Horrors PrevailFew area residents who have driven Boatwright Drive find it enay to believe that any road worse than Boatwright exlsta anywhere In the Old Dominion. Nonetheless, the fiorrors of Boatwright Drive's ascending descending curves and jutting roots pale In comparison with the terrors faced by students motoring along the infamous Gambles Mill Road,As one campus security officer pointed out, one might just oh well walk to Gambles Mill Road during any rainy night to wait for the squeal of tires and the horrible crunch of clashing fenders. The combination of a very narrow road, borders of thick undergrowth, numerous sharp curves, and large trees placed at strategic sections of the road make for one of the worst of this area's frequently traveled roads.Surely a University which so recently paved Itself a now parking lot can afford to widen a dangerous road for which it retains responsibility. As of yet, the University has seriously injured no one because of its negligence nor has any one of the victims of the numerous accidents elected to sue the University (or the City of Richmond, previously responsible) for the negligenco Involved. At the very least, the Univeiaity must consider clearing the undergrowth to allow drivers to see at least part-way around a curve. However, if the cost even of such half way measures proves prohibitive, the University must not hesitate to permanently close Gambles MID Road. In fact, the City of Richmond seriously considered closing Gambles Mill Road before the University of Richmond took responsibility for the road. I here am, after all, other though oftirnes inconvenient ways to get to the campus from River Road.Until the University remedies the situation, howevor, students would do well to drive unusually carefully along Gambles Mill looking well for headlamp beams during the night and hriofly sounding horns before rounding a curve in the daylight. Moreover, Gambles Mill is no place for the Porsche Carrera or 450SL Mercedes, much loss the average full-sized Plymouth. Caveat.
