Historic House Stands at Cottage InnTThis house on the Cottage Inn Farm, owned by Mr5 CbarJe* Olmsted, of Belmont, unoccupied at present, was built in 143 by Nathan Olmsted It was u ed as a residence, as an Inn, where we t% teamsters on the ancient Galena-Mmeral Point road stopped for food rest, and for a period of years from 1846—1865 as the Cottage Inn pcs*cfficeA record of the first breaking of this land and of the “raising” of this house has been kept and because it is probably typical of proceedures of the period we repeat itThe land was “entered” (obtained from the government) by J nies Wiswall or Wiswell It was purchased from Wiswell by Nathan 01msted in 1841 The first breaking was made in 1842, thirty acres of wheat were sown, eight of oats, and three of onions The house was built in 1843 The lumber w-'s obtatmed from the local district and the mound The proprietress of the Inn was accustomed to bake ‘salerated” biscuits for her patrons, bread was not considered good in those days A great pan made to fit the oven of the range and holding four dozen biscuits was m almost constant use~as soon as a panful was baked it was refilled and put back in the oven, for serving morning, noon, and night The teamsters would roll up in their robes and blankets and sleen on the dimng room floor when no other place was available, happy for even such lodging on the long, sparsely-settled road
