BFSttfiK OF OUR VILLAGE HISTORYThe first lot in Belmont village was stfld to Charles Mappes August 17, 1868. Within four months $1,300.-00 worth of lots had been sold and by the end of the year, five months later, sixty-eight buildings had been constructed,The first building erected was the E. H. Marshall Warehouse; Brown Law built and occupied the first store; A. R. Law, of this firm, was the first physician to engage in the practice of medicine here Charles Mappes built, the St Charles hotel; the Methodist Episcopal congregation was organized and a church was built which is still incorporated in the Methodist Episcopal church of today A flax nr.il began operations ; a post office was... . Suit was brought against thR Land Compaiu but a verdict o£ qualified title wa« given tq the defendants Even though the verdict was favorable the litigation had a very bad effe t on the growth of Belmont from which it never fully recovered.In 1871 a new two-story trame school building was costructedA flour mill was established here in 1879 by Chas.
