EXCERPTSFROM , OLD LETTERSFrom Sami White, Newport, Rhode Island, to his son John N, White, Braintree, Mass., dated March 29, 1829.lt;lt;—I am y ci mu! *j[ Lusincooy andhave found but very little to do all winter and business is very dull at present*”* * *Sam't White, East Randolph, Mass., to son Bartimeus White, Jamestown, Grant county, Wisconsin, dated March 20, 1840.—I intended to write you before Leonard Belcher wrote you to inform you of Our late trial and affliction in the sickness and death ofyour brother William which occur-ed last fall. It was a very sickly time among us for a long time lastfall. William appeared to enjoy good health since you was with us until his last sickness in September last, hu disorder seemed to be violent and distressing until his death which was on the 4th day of his sickness. Phebe was taken sickabout 2 weeks before William was sick and was considerable low for about 4 weeks. The sickness began in this place about the middle of July. There has been nearly 30 persons sick between the meeting house and Dean Holbrooks within two or three months time.. . . Business is now very dull here and labor low and it is the same to a great extent in many other places in the U, S. and the people in these eastern states appear to be for a change in our present administration of government and I expect it is something so in the west.As I do not know much about wh*t kind o£ preaching you may have the privilege of hearing but I expect you do not have the privilege of hearing anv very often, I hope you will study the Bible often for it is the only true guide to form our characters so that we may enjoy a treasure and a rest that will remain forever.”
