Judge James M. Allen opened the first session of the first court, the Superior Court, in the present court house. Terre Haute made her first entry into a professional baseball organiza tion by joining the Northwestern League. City council held its first session in the present city hall at Fourth and Walnut streets. Alex McGregor sold his interest in the distillery bearing his name to Hul man Fairbanks, the firm later be coming Fairbanks Duenweg. The disreputable neighborhoods in the west end were known as “Jockey Alley” ,and “Gallatin street.” The city newspapers published their annual item about “William Earl, the sea captain, the first white child born in Terre Haute.” The fight over the substitution of electricity for gas for city lighting purposes brought out communications to the daily papers from Capt. S. H. Potter, one of the principal gas com pany stockholders, who protested against the change because, he said, it interfered with the “vested rights” of the gas company stockholders. City fire alarm system was first es tablished in Terre Haute. Bill Hicks, the burglar, furnished a daily item for the local newspaper. Election of David Phillips as coun cilman to succeed Robert M. Harrison, resigned, caused a change in the po litical complexion of the city council and led to the resignation of W. G. Dickhout as fire chief and all the fire men, Democrats, their places being filled by Republicans. Jim Mitchell hauled Jack Kennedy in a wheelbarrow from Second and Wabash avenue to Ninth and Wabash in payment of a bet that Joseph M. Wildy would defeat Benjamin F. Havens for mayor, Havens being elected. Sam McDonald, wild scion of a wealthy Baltimore family, sent to Terre Haute to settle down, and startled the town and its inhabitants by the wild orgies held at his home on South Sixth street. Old opera house on present site of Naylor-Cox building was opened by John E. Owens, comedian in “Solon Shingle,” star missing train at Indi anapolis and coming here on a special, whose progress along the line was announced from the stage at inter vale, the entire audience waiting sev eral hours for the arrival. First poultry show was held in Terre Haute at the old market house on pres ent site of the city hall. Terre Haute had its first direct rail road connection with Chicago in the completion of the Evansville, Terre Haute Chicago railway, now the Chicago Eastern Illinois.
