St. Stephen's Church.-—In the fall of 1854 the German Catholics of Hamilton* then a feeble folk, finished the building of St Stephen’s, the first Catholic Church in Hamilton, and in October of the same year\VSs ^cate^vith imposing cer- j etnonies. Since then St. Joseph’s Church has been erected in the Second Ward ; the Irish Catholics have provided themselves with a fine property on the corner of Basin and Front; and attached to each oi the German churches, and in the basement of the Irish chuih, large and well ordered pirochia! schools arlt; conducted.The 20th anniversary of the dedication of St. Stephen's was observed bv the coninejja-tion of ihis church Ja«t Sundaj*, ArchbishopPurcell taking a very prominent part in .the. interesting ceremonies incident to the occa sion. At 7 a. m, his Grace blessed two beautiful banners—one for the young men's and the other for the ^oung ladies’ sodahtv-* -O *and at 10 a «. he celebrated solemn highV/mass agisted by six clergymen clad in splen* did vestments, while twenty lads neatly dressed in white, and holding tapers in their hands surrounded the altar. On the iennin-alion of his ministrations the venerable Archbishop retired to his throne on the left side of the church where he was attended by two clergymen. The music during the entire morning sen ice was unquestionablyfine.In the afternoon the now St. Slephen's | cemetery was consecrated, in the ceremoniesof which, as in those of the morning, the Archpishop took a prominent pari. The procession, with its music and bright banners that marched from St. Stephen's JChurch to the cemetery was imposing. Fir-1 ;came the music, then the cross bearer withan Acolyte on either hand, then the children , of the St. Stephen’s and St. Joseph’s paro ! chial schools, and then as many as eleven different societies connected with the two churches. The Archbishop and ;3?e clergy, elegantly attired, occupied *he center of the of the procession.Arrived at the cemetery the con-ecra tion ceremony was performed by the Archbishop assisted by the pastors of all the Catholk churches an Hamilton and by Father WaU* lt;Jus of Cincinnati and three students in the Franciscan school.After the consecration an eloquent senna* in German was delivered by Father Waldos, — Ttiegraph.
