GREENE rex@athensnews-courier.com Both Athens High and Walker have already solidified berths in the upcoming Class SA state football playoffs. But with two Region 8 games left for each, plus one non-region game, both the Golden Eagles and the Vikings have definite plans for tonight’s showdown at Athens Stadium. “If we win tonight, the worst position we can have in the playoffs is third,” Athens High head coach Allen Creasy said. “We can win the rest of them and still end up third, because of the way the region is shaking out, or we can finish first.” The Golden Eagles (4-3 overall) are 4-1 in the region and tied with Walker (5-2) and Hartselle (5-2) for second place behind 5-0 Russellville, which is 6-1 overall. The Vikings, however, are coming off of a 41-14 loss to Russellville on the heels of a 14-12 near-upset by Walker County rival Curry. “This is a real critical point for us,” Walker head coach Bubba Davis said. “We’re not playing well, and we’re beat up. Things just have not gone well for us lately.” The Vikings have plenty to worry Creasy, however. “They are very athletic,” Creasy said of the Vikings. “They are probably the most athletic team that we’ve played this year top to bottom. “They have good size, they have great speed, and they are very physical.” Tailback Sylvester Steward is the leader of the Viking’s offense and their leading rusher. Junior Chad Daniel, who is also a standout at cornerback, is one of Walker’s top receivers. The Vikings expect to be without senior quarterback Cory Boshell, who re-injured his left leg against Russellville last week. In his place junior Josh Walls, who had seen plen ty of playing time already, will start. On defense, free safety Randy Underwood is a speci men. The 6-foot-6, 190-pound junior, is a big-play man for the Vikings defense, as is Daniel. Middle linebacker Chas McCain is Walker’s top tackler. Athens’ multiple attack is led by sophomore quarterback Rob Ezell, who has passed for 899 yards and six touchdowns this season. Senior Jamaal Jude has caught 33 passes for 669 yards and five touchdowns. Tailback Jeremie Slaughter is Athens’ leading rusher with 420 yards, while fullback LeRentae Richardson has added 298. Defensively, senior Wes Brown stabilizes things up front, and senior Jonathan Johnson is steady in the sec ondary. Adam Clem, Kevin Brown, LeRentae Richardson and Lance Vickers can all run at linebacker. Their tailback and their quarterback caught my eye real quick,” Davis said. “The quar terback may be the one that gets overlooked a lot, but he’s scary to me.” News Courier Kim Rynders Kelvin Brown (4) and Wes Brown (15) bring down an Austin runner earlier this season.
