The Wilson encounter had beenbilled as the “toughest game of the year' for the Happy team in its first year of 2-B residency.Friday night, before a drippinghometown crowd, Greg looney put the Cowboys into the scoring column early as he broke through on a two-yard, six point run. Mark Hargrave used his toe and the uprights to make it 7-0.In the second quarter, Mark Weid of Wilson hit the endzone on a 55-yard run. The Mustangs made it 8-7 with a two-point pass from .John Fields to Danny rowson. The first half ended with the Cowboys trailing withthat score.Breaking loose in the third quarter, Happy added a pair oftouchdowns via the Pearson-ljooney Express. Chris Pearson put the Cowboys back out in front with a nine-yard trek and Greg Ijooney matched it wdth a run of eight yards.Pearson picked up four additional second quarter points by running both conversions into the endzone.Still holding the Mustangs at bay, Happy added to their newfound lead in the fourth quarter with Ixxmey making it number three for the night on a one-yard burst. Then Pearson, not to he outdone by his halfback sidekick, intercepted a Wilson pass on the Mustang 24-yard-line andreturned it for the final tally of the night.. • ’ .. ' 5, . . . - •*. .... •*.. - • ; **.» 4 ,*«•*.Hargrave made it one out of three when his kick failed to hitthe mark following the twofourth quarter scores.Coach Robert Criswell said he was “pleased” with the outcome of the game, admitting that he was “scared to death” during the first half.According to the coach, hisoffense managed to move the ball well during that frustrating first period. “Fumbles hurt us,” he , later saying that the sloppy field conditions probably helped his team more than it hampered.Criswell said the entire team did a real fine job” hut he cited starting center Roger Williams, who hacked the line on defense, for an outstanding job. “Williams intercepted one third quarter pass that stopped Wilson, the coach said The Cowboys turned the interception in to one of the winning touchdowns. Criswell said Wiliams also played a major role in stopping the Mustangs on key third down plays on more than one occasion.Another player singled out by the coach was -Jim Hand, 225-pound senior tackle.Next week, at home, the Cowboys take on lazbuddie in another District 2-B game. TheLazbuddie l/mghorns had been undefeated in conference play until Friday night when they dropped a 15-0 match to Nazareth, a team downed by Happy two weeks ago by a 55-6 score.Criswell said his boyscameout of the Wilson fracus unscathed and should be in good shape against Lazbuddie. ‘The rest of the season will he tough,” said Criswell, hut he added that Wilson was the one team that had stood as a potential roadblock to the championship.
