Land LeaseContinued From Page 1 lease, the station has been a morith-to-month tenant of the citv. Mallorv said the stationr ■has been informed it will have to reach agreement with the city on a permanent lease and that the temporary rent cannot continue indefinitely. No deadline, however, lias been set for reaching an agreement. The lease rejected by the Council last week was negotiated for the city by Mallory and the city solicitor, in presenting the proposal to the Council, the city manager called the lease “eminently fair’ in that it gave the station the security of a long -term rental while bringing in revenue for the city on land that would otherwise be unoccupied.Mallory said the matter is nut of his hands and it will be up to the Council and Lerner to come to terms.Regarding the leasing of another piece of city property, the Planning Board has written a letter supporting Mallory’s proposal that city-owned land on Long Wharf be rented for no less than $1,000 a month. Most of the city property on Long Wharf is rented by Newport Oil Corp. for an annual fee of 32,700. A remaining section, along with 215 feet of the east side of the dock, is leased by the Newport Yacht Club far 51,(100 a year. The yacht club sublets the south face of the dock and additional parking space from Newport Oil for SI,(RIO a year. The club, in turn, rents the space to Ihi* federal government for dockage of a Coast Guard ship. The city manager has proposed that Newport Oil’s lease with the city he permitted In expire Nov.l, unless that firm agrees w ith the city on a rental fee. Newport Oil, according to Mallory, has rejected a monthly rental of $1,000.If the lease expires, lie projwsed that the city lease the south side of the dock to the Yacht Club at the present terms of dub’s lease with Newport Oil. This lease would be temporary, he said, since the city’s lease to the club expires next April 3.Charles Soliozy, Planning Board chairman, in a letter made public today, said the board “emphatically disagrees” that any future leases include the south side of the wharf.“It is our strong recommendation that this dockage should be leased directly by the city, and not by the Newport Yacht Club or the Newport Oil Corp. or anyone dse, Soliozy wrote. In this way, he said, the city would realize the maximum return “for this most valuable water front properly.” Mallory in his recommendations Lo the Council has referred to the value of this land, saying it has “great potential for recreational use and is one of the few areas of public access to our harbor.”
