John was young, keen and Intelligent, and one of the moot onpnble and pmmis-.tig N.C’.O.'s iti my company.‘On August 27 we bumped a murh stronger enemy force, unfortunately supported by tnnks. Vour eon was In the forefront of the company which stood the brunt of the attack. However he fought magnificently. despite tanks being within five yards all around his section.A burst of machine gun tire killed him Instantly. If It Is any consolation to you the thiekes* of the enemy dead were piled in front of John and his section. We exacted a toll of 10 for every man we lost. The whole company mourne his death, and I feel that I have lost u personal friend I‘lease accept my deepest and most sincere sympathy for your loss.”
