Kristi K. O’Keefe, daughter of Col. and Mrs. Tim O’Keefe of Niceville, is one of two recipients of the newly established Cooperative Fellowships in Special Education from the combined efforts of the Pasco County Association for Retarded Citizens and St. Leo College. The fellowships involve a pro gram of work, training and partial tuition waiver. The tuition waiver is a combination of an annual President Tuition Waiver to each fellowship recipient of $1,000 from St. Leo College and $2,000 each from the Pasco County Association for Retarded Citizens for a total an nual tuition waiver of $3,000. Each fellowship recipient will receive directed and preferential scheduling of college courses to enable the full-time pursuit of the bachelor of arts degree with con centration in the field of mental retardation. Program graduates are certified as teachers of the mentally handicapped. Also, each recipient will be accepted in a paid part-time position as instructor trainee in the PCARC Center for a period of 25 hours of work per week To receive a fellowship, a can didate must declare a major col lege concentration in the area of mental retardation and should have a minimum SAT score of 840 or a composite ACT score of 17. Prior work experience with the mentally handicapped is strongly desired. O’Keefe, a 1983 graduate of Niceville High School, is a freshman at St. Leo with a concen tration in special education. She has worked as a teacher's aide in an emotionally and mentally han dicapped classroom and par ticipated in the Special Olympics program.
