DUCHKOVA WITH CANADIAN COACH DON WEBBwaited until their visas expired and applied for refugee status, but decided to applyMONTREAL (CP) - Milena Duchkova of Czechoslovakia, a gold medal-winning diver at the 1968 Olympic Games, applied for permanent Canadian residence here Monday along with her husband and 22-month-old daughter.Duchkova won the goldmedal in the 10-metre tower diving event at Mexico City, and captured the silver medal four years later at the Munich Olympics,Puchkova, regarded as a national hero in her homeland after her performance at Mexico City, plans to move to St, John's, Nfld., with her husband, Petr Nevekiovsky, and daughter, Misa.Nevekiovsky, - who speaks little English, is a highly-re-„ garded volleyball coach.The 28-year-old Duchkova came to Canada with her daughter last January on a one-year working visa as a salaried employee of' Sport Canada, conducting diving and coaching clinics across the country.Nevekiovsky joined them in August oh a four-month granted leave, and the couple has been making arrangements to make Canada theirlong time and this seemed like the perfect chance,”The couple could haveimmediately for permanent residence..Canadian authorities could issue acceptance of their applications within weeks, Duchkova’s credentials reach beyond that of divingNewfoundland.Nevekiovsky, 33, hopes to improve his English by attending classes, and plans to seek employment within Canada’s volleyball program,Don Webb, Canada’s top diving coach and* a close friend of Duchkova since 1968, arranged for her one-year stay.“1 think the bottom line of Milena’s coming here is thatshe didn’t want to raise her♦daughter in Czechoslovakia,” Webb said. “I personally don’t like the word defection, because we’re hoping an equita-ble arrangement can be reached between the two governments.”permanent home ever since.“We are all looking forward to making Canaaa our home,” Duchkova said. “We have been planning this move for a•instructor.
