Barksdale1 for conspiracy to counsel resistance to the selective service act.A federal court jury found the 24 guilty late last night after deliberating more than five hours. They face sentences of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine each.Ferdinand Callsen, South Bend, Indiana. bund official, was the only one of the national and local bund leaders to b? fout\d not guilty, but he was remanded to jail by Judge Barksdale to face another indictment charging conspiracy to, violate the alien registration law.National Officers ConvictedAll the national officers of the bund were convicted. They *were Gerhardt Wilhelm .Kunze, bund feuhter and con. fessed Nazi spy; Gustav Elmer, bund ■reasurer; August Klapprott, head of 'he eastern division; Herman Schwinn, head of the bunds western department, and Wilbur V. Keegan, bund counsel.The prosecution of the bund leaders 'was conducted by U. S. District Attorney Matthias F Forrea and it was charged Kunze issued a secret order which read in part.“We tthe German-American Bund) represent the standjxhnt that an injunction in the military service is not justified as far as it concerns bund members and Ameri-an Germans, for in the selective service law the citizenship rights of bund members and the defenders of Germandom are unconstitutionally severed.“Refuse Military Duty”“Fvery man. if he can, will refuse to do military duty until this law and all other laws of the country and states which confinp citizenship rights of bund members are revoked. We will fight to establish a precedent in this service matter.Eleven attorneys defended the bund members and contended, for the most oart. that the bund merely wanted to make a test ca^e of the draft act.
