A Basy Town Surrounded By Many Natural Resources By a Staff Correspondent The enchanting little city of Hillsboro is delightfully situated on a beautiful elevation, and is surrounded by one of the richest agricultural districts in the state. The bustling town is located on the Big Four railway, in the east ern part of Fountain county, mid way between Crawfordsville, Ind., and Danville, Sr., and it ‘has two capacious grain elevators, two large same mills, grist mill, cement and tileworks, many substantial brick business blocks, ‘two banks, a fine high school, good churches and a Ive and hustling clan , business men and citizens. The town also ‘boasts of several paved streets and many blocks of cement sidewalks, and ‘her future is as sured, THE FARMERS’ BANK OF HILLSBORO. This live financial institution was organized in 1906, since which time it has met with a well-won success from an appreciative public. Mr. CG. E. Short is president; Mr. John J. Reeves vice-president; and Mr. James J. Williams,the able and ef ficient cashier, and a general banking business is transacted by this old, reliable concern. Cor respondents are Fletcher’s Ameri can National Bank of Indianapolis the largest in the state, and the Continental and Commercial Bank of Chicago, the largest in the west. BANK OF HILLSBORO. The Bank of Hillsboro was estab lished in 1895, and 4 is the oldest and strongest financial institution in this section of fountain county. Mr. Frank Frazier is president ,Mr. John W. Frazier cashier, and Mr. Isaac Hamilton assistant cashier. A general banking business is trans acted, loans made on approved se cutes, mortgages negotiated, de posite received, and every favor consistent with sound and conser vative banking ‘is extended to its patrons by the management. HILLSBORO HARDWARE CO. The individual members of this extensive hardware company con sist of the following centlemen: Mr. ©. E. Short, president; Mr. A. D. Keeling, Mr. Chas. Livengood, and Mr. Daniel Hutchins, all of whom are widely and favorably known. The imposing new build ing is three stories in height, with a basement, and the vast floor space covers an area of 10,150 sq. feet. The stock comprises both heavy and shelf hardware, the famous “Florence Hot Blast” air tight heaters, ‘the celebrated “Ma jestic” malleable steel ranges, the Capital City liquid paints, guns, wire fencing, cream separators,bug gies, harness, and ‘the “Peter Schit ter’ and the “Birdsell’ wagons. HILLSBORO LUMBER CO. The stock carried by this com pany comprises the best grade of rough and dressed timber, laths, shingles, sash, doors, blinds, lime, mouldings, cement, plaster, roof ing brick, tile, salt, paint, glass, and building material in general and Mr. Freeman Osborne, the manager, can give contractors and those who contemplate building the best of figures. WILT LAIRD. The large and systematically ar ranged store occupied by the a bove named firm comprises the best grades of both theavy and shelf hardware, edge tools, cut lery, the famous “Retort” special heating stores, ‘the world’s best “Garland” stoves and ranges, the “Nubian” hot blast heater, tin “ore, cream separators, ‘harness, robes and ‘the “Deere” grain drills and the famous “Turnbull” wa gons, HARRISON FINCH COMPANY. The large and capacious grain elevator of the above-named gen tlemen is managed by Mr. E. P Finch, and the plant and large coal sheds are located in close proximity to the railroad station. Mr. Finch pays the highest market price for all kinds of grain, and is always posted in rewards to the very latest market quotations,and he handles the best grades of both tard and soft coal, and he sells at prices that defy the most formid able competition. J. L. HORN, Mr. James Horn conducts a well equipped lumber mil, and he is prepared to cut and furnish all ‘kinds of ‘hardwood lumber of any dimensions to parties in need of this product of manufacture, and all orders and contracts area very promptly filted, and Mr. Horn is prepared at all times to do ecus tom sawing for ‘the farmers who bring their fogs ‘to the mil. HOLLAND FURNITURE Co. The Holland Furniture Co. (Co operative) are the largest dealers in furniture in this section of the country, and their estock comprises the best grades of rich parlor, chamber and dining room furni ture, chiffoniers, davenports, car pets, rugs, linoleums, oil cloths,cof fins, caskets, and undertakers sup plies and Mr. John Holy'and the manager, makes ‘a specialty of un dertaking and embalming. Branch store at Newtown. JOHN D. TINSLEY. In our review of this nature we desire to call the public’s atten tion to the well-equipped harness shop so ably conducted by Mr. J. D. Tinsley. This gentleman car ries a well-selected line of light blankets, and horse clothing in general, including the Hass Bros, driving and mounted harness for heavy wear, bridles, halters, robes galt care and the celebrated Cats’ Paw heels and soles and a special ty is made of repairing’ ‘harness and, shoes, L. L. WOOD. This gentleman conducts a model barber shop and jewelry establish ment and he employs only expert workmen. The shop is provided with three of the latest chairs, keen razors, clean towels, and a specialty is made of fashionable hair cutting, shampooing and face massage, and, his stock of jewelry comprises watches for the standard movements, handsome jewelry of new and novel designs, also con fections, cigars, tobacco, etc, and a specialty is made of fine watch work and repairing by Mr. F. B. Conway, who is an expert in the jewelery art, LON RILEY. Mr. Lon Riley conducts the leading and most up-to-date meat market in this section of the coun try, and he supplies his large corps of ‘patrons with the best of cured and fresh meats the market affords, and he pays the highest market price for hides, pelts, etc. HILLSBORO CEMENT WORKS. This large plant is conducted by Mr. CC. W. Sandall, the resident manager, and the latest and best machinery has lately been in stalled and this gentleman is pre pared to turn out the best kind of cement tile from 21-2 to 12 inches, and all orders will be promptly filled, SCHARF, THE DRUGGIST. Mr. Scharf carries the ‘best class of drugs to be found in this district, and his elegantly ap pointed store is filled ‘with the purest of drugs and chemicals, pat ent medicines and pharmacetical preparations. Also perfumes,post cards, school supplies, jewelry,etc, and a specialty is made of the pre scription case, SEYMOUR SHOAF. This popular livery stable is well equipped and he has many first-class turnouts and splendid roadsters for making lively times and a specialty is made of the wants of the traveling public,and all speak in the highest terms of praise of his treatment and his charges are right. J. D. LINVILLE CO, The members of this leading firm are fully up to the times in mer cantile ethics, and they carry an elegant array of fall and printed dry and fancy goods, hosiery, nov elties and notions, clothing, gents fine furnishings, carpets, rugs,dra peries and light and heavy foot wear, including a complete line of both staple and fancy groceries, and country ‘produce, all in excel lent assortment and ‘great variety. W. M. LYONS. The stock carried ‘by this gen tleman is very diversified, and consists of the best grades of sta ple and fancy groceries, canned goods, confections, dried and fresh fruits, cigars, tobaccos,over alls, shirts, jackets, gloves, no tions, etc, including the famous “Walkover” shoes, the best and most durable manufactured, MAIN STREET HOTEL. This popular hostlery is ably conducted by Mrs. Ella Carter,and it is strictly first-class in all its appointments and well patronized by the traveling public, all of whom speak in the highest terms of praise of their treatment and they never fail to call again. THOS. SUMNER. This old reliable druggist en joys his ‘quota of the trade and his stock is complete in every detail, comprising drugs,medicines stationery and school supplies, and a specialty is made of compound ing physicians prescriptions and family recipes with accuracy and dispatch. SAM SARGENT. This gentleman conducts the leading blacksmith shop of the town and in addition to general blacksmithing, forging, plow,dies, wood and wagon work, general repairing, etc., a specialty is made of practical horseshoeing on sci entific principles, and perfect sat isfaction is guaranteed. JOHN HARPER. This gentleman is the exclusive baker of Hillsboro, and he turns out the finest breadstuffs daily; pies, cakes, rolls, etc., and he nev er fails to give the best of satis faction. G. W. BERRY. The large, commodious and thor oughly up-to-date general store so ably presided over by Mr. G. W. Berry is filled to repletion with nearly anything and everything to eat and wear, including dry goods, work clothes, gents and ladies furnishings, hats and caps, grocer ies, etc. Also the famous “Brown 5-Star” and the “White House’ shoes and the “Straight Line” of Ball brand robbers, THOS. J. GOODMAN. This gentleman serves regular meals at proper hours, and lunches and short orders at all times in a most appetizing manner, and he carries a choice line of candies, ci gars and smoking articles in gen eral and fruits in season.
