j in these stirring tunes is a convenience, whether it be a virtue or not.* • # *1 Tub persons who took up land in the9 Northern Territory some time ago for thepursue of sugar growing are not content with their selection-, and now they want to play a nice little game, by getting the Government to t4u« % bill allowing them toamalgaraate. The list of persons who had these special grants of lands for the purpose of starting sugar growing was given by the Chief Secretary on Tuesday - 1 as follows : — “ John Spence, David Spence, A William Owston, 10.000 acree ; John 8. Peterson 10,000 acres ; B. C, De-Dinss 10.000 acres; G- T. Bean, 5.000I acres ; W. H. He an, 5.000 seres ; Arthur Bean 5,000 acres; L. Sc.uuiiiell 5,000 acres ; J. 11. Jordan, 5,000 acres ; Phillip Levi 5,000 acres ; A. W. Sergison, 5,000 (interest herein since transferred to Lyonsf; A Fisher); K. W. fc.oUc, 6,000 acres ;II George 8carfe, 3,000 acres ; W. ltoss j Sawers, 3,000 acree ; W. B. Rounsevell,I 3.000 acres; James F, Wigley, 3,000 aci ea;, W. K. Simms, 3,000 acres ; W. T. Foster . 3,000 acres ; F. F. Bucknall, 3,000 acres ;I J. Richardson, 3,000 acres ; A. R. Mal-i com, 3,000 acres ; F. S. McCrae, 3,1)00 ! acres; total, 100,000 acres. ” The plea | set up in favor of allowing thoee personswho have applied, to amalgamate, is that i it will encourage speculation, and that the j fn|( sugar industry in the Territory will j pilt receive an impetus commensurate with the j rep libera^ treatment of the Government. j ,1r* Now to persons wha are not pecuniariiy t \ interested in these grants it appears very ( for much like an attempt on the part of the hai selectors to get at the Government, so *fnfthat they igay monopolise an extensive ”a I ii avt La* m/■ a Imvarea of country by forming a company, ! ^hwhich will in course of time develop intotIIa gigantic monopoly having the whole of jolthethe sngar trade in the Territory in ita own hands. Surely if a grant of 10,(103 \acres of land is not sufficient to encourage , wlt; the sugar industry it is not worth develop tirn ing ; and if the selectors have greedily \ taken up land which they have not the ; It » ' cipitul to work they have no right to ask fo r that they may be allowed further priviliges of 1 f«»r carrying out the contract into which , \n they have entered, and which in all conscience is lil*eral enough. If they can't manage to start sugar cultivat- 'y ing nndfer the very lihcr.il arrangements • (made itith the Government they had | An* better stand aside and let those who are Tre willing and able, to do so, and there will i witl ho pl»*nty of persons who will take the I ^ thing in hand readily enough when once ’ bar it has been proved that sugar can be profitably grown in the Territory.rouIon*be ven het' to I
