His interest in film work increased when he spent some time working in the set design department at Columbia studios in 1940.In 1948 he and Richard Foster, a Berkeley business management consultant, started to explore for the non-commercial films made by artists. They dug into the material available from the Museum of Modem Art in New York and,wrote to European sources for experimental films. When they put on their first Art in Cinema” series at the San Francisco Museum of Art, they were amazed at the tremendous response from the people. The later published a book called “Art in Cin-rnvest in a sure thing, they should contact me. It’s bound to pay off!Madera Larks Break Camp, Give $500 For Lions RecreationThe first program of its kind in the country, others followed rapidly in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Hundreds of people were fed up with the slick commercial films in which there was “too much money ... too much greatness and not enough obscurity ... too many stars and not enough shedding of light”, according to Ernest Betts in The Future of Films.”Stauffacher explained, “I and other experimental film makers are not trying to copy Hollywood’s slick finish. We are trying to search for a new kind of poetic language with the camera ”“Sausalito” which he shot with a Bolex 16 milimeter camera was “an attempt to use the camera personally without a production crew, actors or elaborate staging ... to use it to photograph everyday objects and put them together in such a way that it creates a definite statement.”In trying to do the same thing with the sound, Stauffacher recorded the various natural sounds including bells, whistles, sea gulls’ screams that are characteristic of Sausalito. He then cut the sound $rack to pieces and separated them. They were then fitted together and edited in the same way as a film track.Comparing such an experimental film to modem poetry, the photographer said he “dovetailed images one into the other to evoke certain sensations. Images or pictures may be Joined by Just a thread of connection ... a gull flying turns into a paper, the paper into a sailboat ...”From the film, he says he learned a better sense of timing and a great deal more about how to put a sound track together with the images.Winner with James Broughton of an honorable mention for their film “Mother’s Day” at the Russell Film Festival in Brussel this year, Stauffacher is now completing work on a film called “Goethe in San Francisco” which will be shown at theFive hundred dollars will be put into a trust fund- this week by the Madera-Larks Club of Larkspur and Corte Madera, to be turned over to the Lions Club when construction starts on the Lions Recreation park in Larkspur.The Madera-Larks Club is disbanding because of lack of new membership and interest, according to Robert Mistrom, its first president, and has $500 in its treasury.
