‘Delphi. Police Chief Dennis B. Webb was notified about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday that he was relieved of the position of chief of police. Mayor Carolyn Wagner informed Chief Webb personally by handing him a letter with the notification. Her letter also informed him that he ‘‘will resume the duties of a patrolman on October 19 ° (today). According to the mayor the ac tion was ‘taken due to the police chief disobeying a direct order. The mayor reportedly observed a measuring the police of ficers for new uniforms on October 11. She informed Webb and the Salesman that the uniforms were not to be ordered until the first of the year, 1984. Although $1,500 is in the 1984 budget for uniforms, the state tax board has not yet approved it, the mayor said.Also, any amount $200 or over has to be knowledge or con sent of the city council and the uniform money had not been ap proved for this year. The mayor reportedly called the factory, discovered the uniforms had been ordered and she cancelled the order. Two uniforms reportedly had been ordered for each officer. Webb, who was not available for comment, was appointed chief of police on March 1, 1982, after serv ing on the Delphi Police Depart ment since December 22, 1980. 100 YEARS OLD - May Wagoner, who will be 100 Oct. 24, still plays the piano.
