Judges for the 1964 Mary Gilmore Awards were announced last weekend by the Mary Gilmore Award com mittee. The award will be in two s ections: 1. A three-act play, with a Mary Gilmore medallion and prize of £ 75, plus £ 25 towards the cost of production of the play. 2. A short story, with an industrial theme, with a Mary Gilmore medallion and prize of £ 50 judges in the three-act play section are John Clark, tutor in Drama at the University of N.S.W., nominated by the Australian — Elizabethan Theatre Trust, and actor/pro ducer John Gray, who has been nominated by the New Theatre. Short Story The judges for the short story will be Melbourne novelist Judah Waten, the president of the Melbourne Trades Hall Council, “Jock” Innes, and the editor of Common Cause, Sydney, Ed ugar Ross. ‘Announcing the names of judges, the committee, of which Dymphna Cusacks is president, urged Australian writers to take to heart the following words once spoken by the late Mary Gilmore: ‘Eighty years ago Lawson and Furphy embodied in Australian Literature the traditions Australians had already forged on the gold fields, the waterfront and in the_shearing-shed. “Today, we must show] these same traditions working win a modern world, “Let the young writers get cracking!”
